FLOURISHING IN THE DESERT – COLOSSIANS 1
November 5, 2017 – Pastor Jared Stacy, Elder
The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most radical moments of Jesus’ life and ministry. Not only is it the launching pad for his teaching, but it was revolutionary for this culture. Jesus is describing what it is like to be a part of a new kingdom that he is establishing. The Beatitudes are new kingdom rules and attributes his followers should have. The result of living in this new kingdom is a flourishing life.
While we are primarily in Matthew 5, the Bible’s theme of flourishing is evident.
This week, Pastor Jared, teaches us what it means to flourish in the desert from Colossians 1.
1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (ESV)
24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings on your behalf. And with my own body I supplement whatever is lacking [on our part] of Christ’s afflictions, on behalf of His body, which is the church.
1. What do I need to rejoice in?
2. What attributes is God trying to grow in my life in the midst of these circumstances?
3. What steps do I need to take to rejoice in my suffering?

“Biblical flourishing is rejoicing in hard times. We don’t rejoice becomes of the hard things, we rejoice in them.”Pastor Jared Stacy
